1 My children, I write you these things so that you might not sin. And if anyone [might] sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2 And he is (the) propitiation(=atoning sacrifice) for our sins, not for ours only but also for the whole world.
3 And in(=by) this we know that we have known Him, if we [may] keep His commandments.
4 The one saying, “[that] I have known Him,” and not keeping His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in this (man),
5 but whoever [may] keeps His word, truly the love of God has been perfected in this (man). By this we know that we are in Him.
6 The one saying to abide(=that he abides) in Him ought himself also to walk just as that one(=Jesus) walked.
7 Beloved, I am not writing you a new commandment, but an old commandment which you were having(=have had) from (the) beginning. The old commandment is the word which you have heard.
8 Again I am writing you a new commandment, that is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
9 The one saying to be(=that he is) in the light and hating his brother is in the darkness until now.
10 The one loving his brother abides in the light, and stumbling block is not in him.
11 But the one hating his brother is in the darkness, [and] walks in the darkness, and does not know(# perfect as present) where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 I write to you, children, because the(=your) sins having been forgiven(=has been forgiven) you for his name’s sake.
13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known the One (who is) from (the) beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
14 I have written to you, children, because you have known the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you have known the One (who is) from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, [and] the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone [may] loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him,
16 because all that (is) in the world - the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of [the] life - is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 And the world passes away, and the lust of it (passes away), but the one doing the will of God abides unto the age(=forever).
18 Children, it is (the) last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, from which fact we know that it is (the) last hour.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been(# unreal condition) of us, they would have remained with us; but (they went out), that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us.
20 And you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.
21 I have not written (to) you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it and because every lie is not of the truth.
22 Who is the liar but the one denying that Jesus is [not] the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one denying the Father and the Son.
23 No one denying the Son has the Father. The one confessing the Son has the Father also.
24 Let what you have heard from (the) beginning abide in you. If what you have heard from (the) beginning [might] abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
25 And this is the promise which He has promised us - the eternal life.
26 I have written these things (to) you about the ones misleading you.
27 And the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone [may] teach you, but as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, abide in Him.
28 And now, children, abide in Him, so that if(=when) He [might] appears we might have confidence and might not be ashamed from(=before) Him at his coming.
29 If you [may] know that He is righteous, you know that everyone doing the righteousness has been born of Him.
