(=alt.word)  ·  (added word)  ·  [omit]

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, [having] met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and [having] blessed him,

to whom Abraham divided(=gave) a tenth of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, which is “king of peace,”

without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but having been made like the Son of God, remains a priest in the continuous(=forever).

And see how great this (man was), to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth from(=of) the choicest spoils. 5 And the ones indeed from(=of) the sons of Levi, receiving the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is, (from) their brothers, although having come(=they have come) out of the loin(=loins) of Abraham.

And the one not being descended from them took tithes (from) Abraham, and blessed the one having the promises.

And without any dispute the lesser(=inferior) is blessed by the better(=superior).

And here, in the one case, the dying(=mortal) men receive tithes; (but) in the other case, there (the one) being testified that he lives (receives them).

And as to say a word(=so to speak), Levi also receiving tithes has been taken(=paid) tithes through Abraham,

For he was still in the loin(=loins) of the(=his) father when Melchizedek met him.

Therefore if perfection were(=had been attained)1 through the Levitical priesthood, for under it the people was given(=received) a law, why (was there) still need (for) another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, not be called according to the order of Aaron?

For the priesthood’s being changed(=when there is a change of the priesthood)2, there is also from necessity(=necessarily) a change of (the) law.

For he of whom these things is(=are) said has belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served (at) the altar.

For (it is) clear that our Lord has risen from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing about priests.

And it is still more evident if another priest according to the likeness of(=like) Melchizedek arises,

who has become (a priest) not according to (the) law of a fleshy commandment but according to (the) power of an indestructible life,

for it is testified, “[that] You (are) a priest unto the age(=forever) according to the order of Melchizedek.”

For, on the one hand, there is an annulment of (the) preceding commandment because of its weak(=weakness) and useless(=uselessness),

for the law made nothing perfect; (there is), on the other hand, (the) introduction of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

And inasmuch as (it was) not without an oath; for, on the one hand, they are having become(=have become)3 priests without any oath,

on the other hand, the one(=Jesus) with an oath through the One(=God) saying to him, “The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest unto the age(=forever).’”

By so much more Jesus has become (the) guarantee of a better covenant.

And, on the one hand, (the) priests are having become(=were)4 many in number, because of to be prevented(=because they were prevented) by death to continue(=from continuing in office),

on the other hand, the because of him to remain(=because he remains) on to the age(=forever), he has a permanent priesthood,

therefore, he is also able to save to the entire(=completely) the ones coming through him to [the] God, living always [for the] to intercede for them.

For such a high priest was fitting (for) us, (who is) holy, blameless, undefiled, having been separated from [the] sinners, and having become higher than heavens,

who has not necessity(=no need) during day(=daily), as the high priests, to offer sacrifices first for the(=his) own sins, (and) then the (sins) of the people; for this he did once for all, having offered himself.

For the law appoints (as) high priests men having weakness, but the word of oath after the law (appoints the) Son having been perfected unto the age(=forever).
