And it came to pass, in the(=while)1 [the] Apollos to be in(=was at) Corinth, (for) Paul, having passed through the upper parts(=districts), to come to Ephesus and to find some disciples.
And he said (to) them, “Did you receive (the) Holy Spirit, having believed?” And they (said) to him, “But we have never heard if there is (the) Holy Spirit.”
And he said, “Therefore, into what were you baptized?” And they said, “into John’s baptism.”
And Paul said, “John baptized (with) baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the One coming after him, this is on [the] Jesus.”
And having heard, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And [the] Paul’s laying hands on them(=when Paul laid his hands upon them)2, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they were speaking in tongue and were prophesying.
And all the men were about twelve.
And having entered into the synagogue, he was boldly speaking for three month, discussing and persuading about the kingdom of God.
But when some were being hardened and [being] disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he, having left from them, took away the disciples, daily discussing in the school of Tyrannus.
And this happened for two years, so that all the ones living (in) [the] Asia to hear(=heard) the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
And [the] God was doing extraordinary miracles through Paul’s hands,
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons to be carried away(=brought) from his skin(=body) upon(=to) the sick, [and] the disease to be removed(=left) from them, and the evil spirits to go out(=went out)
But some of the wandering Jews, exorcists, tried to name the name of the Lord Jesus over the ones having the evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you (by) the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”
And seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this.
And having answered, the evil spirit said (to) them, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul. But who are you?”
And having leaped on them, a man in whom the evil spirit was, having mastered both(=all), overpowered against them, so that (they) to escape(=fled) from that house naked and [having been] wounded.
And this became known to all Jews and Greeks living (in) Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.
And many of the ones having believed were coming confessing and reporting their practices.
And many of the ones practising the magical things, having brought the books together, were burning (them) before all. And they counted the values of them, and found (it) fifty thousand (pieces) of silver.
So the word of the Lord powerfully grew and were overpowering.
And when these things were fulfilled, having passed through [the] Macedonia and Achaia, [the] Paul put for himself(=resolved) in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, saying “[that] After (for) me to become(=I have been) there, it is necessary for me to see(=I must see) Rome also.”
And having sent into Macedonia two of the ones serving [to] him, Timothy and Erastus, he stayed (for) a time(#accusative of duration) in [the] Asia.
And about that time there was no little(=considerable)3 disturbance about the Way.
For a certain silversmith by name(=named) Demetrius, making silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little(=considerable)4 business to the technicians(=craftsmen),
whom having called together(=he called together) and with the workmen of like (occupation), and he said, “Men, you understand that from this business the wealth is to us(=we get our wealth).”
“And you see and hear that this Paul, having persuaded, turned away a considerable crowd not only of Ephesus but (also) of nearly all Asia, saying that the ones becoming(=being made) through hands are not gods.”
“Not only is this share to us(=our business) in danger to come into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis to be considered for(=as) nothing, and also her greatness(#partitive genitive) to be about to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
And having heard and having become full of anger, they were crying out, saying, “Great (is) the Artemis(=Diana) of (the) Ephesians.”
And the city was filled of(=with) confusion, and they rushed with one mind into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travelling-companions.
And Paul’s wanting(=when Paul wanted)5 to enter into the people, the disciples were not allowing him.
Also some of the officials of Asia, being to him friends, having sent to him, were begging not to give himself(=that he would not venture) into the theatre.
[Therefore] some indeed were shouting one thing and some another, because the assembly was having been confounded(=was confused), and most of the people did not know for what they had come together.
But they drew Alexander out of the crowd, the Jews’ putting him forward(=when the Jews put him forward)6. And [the] Alexander, having shaken down the(=his) hand, was wanting(=wated) to make a defence to the people.
But having recognized(=when they knew) that he is a Jew, there was one voice from all, crying out for about two hours, “Great (is) the Artemis of (the) Ephesians.”
And having quieted the crowd, the town clerk says, “Men of Ephesus, what men are there who do not know (that) the city of the Ephesians being(=is) temple-keeper of the great Artemis and of the image fallen from the sky?”
“Therefore, these things’s being undeniable(=since these things are undeniable)7, it is necessary (for) you(=you ought) to be having been quieted(=quiet) and to do nothing rash.”
“For you have brought these men, (who are) neither temple-robbers nor ones blaspheming our goddess(=blasphemers of our doddess).”
“Therefore if indeed Demetrius and the workmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls, let them bring charge against one another.”
“But if you look for anything further, it shall be settled in the legal assembly.”
“For we are in danger to be charged(=of being charged) with today’s riot, nothing’s being cause(=there is no cause)8 about which we are able to give an account(=to justify) about this commotion.”
And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
