In these days, the disciples’ increasing(=when the disciples were increasing in number)1, there was a grumbling of the Hellenists(=Grecian, Greek-speaking Jews) against the Hebrews(=Aramaic speaking Jews), because their widows were being neglected in the daily service(=distribution).

And having called the multitude of the disciples (to them), the twelve said, “It is not good for us, giving up God’s word, to serve tables(# acc. of respect).”

But brothers, choose seven men from(=among) you, being(=who are) respected, full of Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint over this business.

But we will devote ourselves to the prayer and to the ministry of the word.

And the word pleased [before] all the multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolause a proselyte of Antioch,

whom they caused to stand before the apostles, and having prayed, they put on them their hands.

And the word of God was growing, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was being greatly increased, and a great crowd of the priests was obeying (to) the faith.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

And some of the ones from the synagogue being called (synagogue) of Freedmen(=Libertines), and of Cyrenians, and of Alexandrians, and (some) of the ones from Cilicia and Asia, rose up debating (with) Stephen.

And they were not able to stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

Then they induced men saying(=to say), “We have heard him speaking(=speak) blasphemous sayings against Moses and [the] God.”

And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes. And having come up, they seized him and took to the council.

And false witnesses stood, saying “This man does not cease speaking(=to speak) sayings(=words) against this holy place and the law,”

“because we have heard him saying, ‘Jesus, this Nazarene, will destroy this place and will change the customs which Moses handed over to us.’”

And having gazed at him, all the ones sitting in the council saw his face as the face of angel.
