And in (the) fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate’s governing(=when Pontius Pilate was governor)1 of Judea, and Herod’s being tetrarch(=when Herod was tetrarch)2 of Galilee, and Philip his brother’s being tetrarch(=when Philip his brother was tetrarch) of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias’ being tetrarch(=when Lysanias was tetrarch) of Abilene,

on(=in the period of the) high priest of Annas and Caiaphas, (the) word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

And he came to all the surrounding country of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins,

as it has been written in (the) book of (the) words of Isaiah the prophet, “A voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of (the) Lord, make his paths straight,’”

“every(# distributive) valley shall be filled, and every(# distributive) mountain and hill shall be made low. And the crooked (ones, # neutral) shall be into straight (ones) and the rough (ways, # feminine) (shall be) into smooth way.”

“and all flesh will see the salvation of God.”

Therefore he was saying to the crowds going out to be baptized by him, “Offsprings of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?”

“Therefore, bear fruits worthy of repentance. And do not begin to say in yourselves, ‘We have Abraham (as) Father, for I say (to) you that [the] God is able from these stones to raise up children to [the] Abraham.’”

“And the ax also is already laid to the root of the trees, therefore every(# distributive) tree not bearing good fruit is cut and is thrown into (the) fire.”

And the crowds were asking him, saying, “What then might(=shall) we do?”

And having answered, he was saying to them, “The one having two tunics, let him share to(=with) the ones not having, and the one having food[s], let him do likewise.”

And the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said (to) him, “Teacher, what might(=shall) we do?”

“and whose winnowing fork (is) in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff (with) unquenchable fire.”

And therefore, exhorting indeed many other things, he was evangelizing the people.

But [the] Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all evil things that [the] Herod did,

added this above all, (that) he shut up [the] John in prison.

and the Holy Spirit to come down(=the Holy Spirit descended) upon him in bodily form as(=like) a dove, and a voice to come from heaven(=a voice came from heaven), “You are my beloved son; in(=with) you I was well pleased(=am well pleased)6.”
