1 And it happened, in those days, (that there) went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, (that) all the world to(=should) be enrolled.

2 This was first enrolment Quirinius’s governing(=when Quirinius ruled)1 the Syria.

3 And all were going to be enrolled, each to his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from [the] Galilee, out of (the) town of Nazareth, to [the] Judea, to (the) town of David, which is called Bethlehem, because of him to be(=because he was) out of (the) house and family of David,

5 to be enrolled with Mary having been betrothed to him (and) being pregnant.

6 And it happened, in [the] them to be(=while they were) there, (that) the days of (=for) her to bear were fulfilled.

7 And she bore her first son, and she wrapped him and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

8 And there were shepherds in the same region, living in the fields and keeping watch over their flock of(=at) night.

9 And an angel of (the) Lord appeared to them, and (the) glory of (the) Lord shone around them, and they were terrified (with) great fear.

10 And the angel said (to) them, “Do not fear(=be afraid), for behold, I bring you good news (of) great joy that will be to all the people,”

11 “because (to) you has been born today in (the) city of David a Savior, who is Christ (the) Lord.”

12 “And this (will be) a sign to you, ‘You will find a baby having been wrapped and lying in a manger.’”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host praising [the] God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in (the) highest (places), and on earth peace in(=among) men of good will.”

15 And it happened, when the angels went away from them to [the] heaven, (that) the shepherds were saying to one another, “Then, let us go to Bethlehem, and let us see this saying(=thing)2 having happened, which the Lord made known (to) us.”

17 And having seen, they made known about the word spoken (to) them about this child.

18 And all the ones having heard marvelled about(=at) the things spoken by the shepherds to them.

19 But [the] Mary was keeping all this things, pondering (them) in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising [the] God for all things that they heard and saw as it had been spoken to them.

21 And when eight days to circumcise him were accomplished, and his name was called Jesus, the (name) having called by the angel before the him to be conceived(=before he was conceived) in the womb.

22 And when the days of their cleansing according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they took [up] him to Jerusalem to present to the Lord,

23 as it has been written in [the] law of the Lord, [that] “Every male opening up (the) womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”

24 and to give a sacrifice according to the thing having been said in the law of (the) Lord, “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”

25 And behold, a man was in Jerusalem to whom name was Simeon, and this man (was) righteous and devout, waiting for (the) consolation of Israel, and (the) Holy Spirit was upon him.

26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit not to see(=that he should not see) death before he might see(=had seen) the Christ of (the) Lord.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple; and in the parents the to bring in(=when the parents brought in) the child Jesus [the them] to do for him according to the custom of the law,

28 [and] he received him in the(=his) arms, and blessed [the] God, and said,

29 “Now you dismiss your slave in peace, Master, according to your word,”

30 “for my eyes saw your salvation,”

31 “which have prepared before (the) face(=in the sight)3 of all the peoples,”

32 “a light for revelation of (the) Gentiles, and glory of your people Israel.”

33 And his father and mother was(=were) marvelling at the things being said about him.

34 And Simeon blessed them and said (to) Mary his mother, “Behold, this (child) is destined for falling and rising of many in [the] Israel, and for a sign having spoken against,”

35 “and a sword will pierce through your own soul, so that thoughts out of many hearts might(=will) be revealed.”

36 And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, from(=of) the tribe of Asher. This (woman was) having advanced in many days(=very old), having lived with (her) husband seven years from her virginity,

37 and this (woman was) a widow until (she) was eighty four, who was not leaving the temple, worshipping (with) fasting[s] and praying[s] night and day.

38 And having come up at the very hour, she was praising [the] God, and was speaking about him to all the ones waiting redemption of Jerusalem.

39 And when they finished all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to [the] Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.

40 And the child was growing and becoming strong, being filled (with) wisdom, and (the) grace of God was upon him

41 And his parents were going to Jerusalem every year (at) the feast of Passover.

42 And when he was twelve years (old), their going up(=as they were going up)4 according to the custom of the feast,

43 And having completed the days, in them the to return(=when they returned), the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents did not know (it),

44 but having supposed him to be in the company, they went a day’s way(=journey), and was looking for him among the(=their) relatives and the(=their) acquaintances,

45 and having not found, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.

46 And it happened after three days, (that) they found him in the temple, sitting in (the) midst of teachers, (both) hearing them and asking them (questions);

47 and all the ones hearing him were being astonished at his intelligence and answers.

48 And having seen him, they were amazed, and his mother said (to) him, “Son, why did you do so to us? behold, your father and I being distressed are seeking you.”

49 And he said (to) them, “Why [that] were you seeking me? Were you not knowing(#pluperfect as imperfect) that it is necessary (for) me to be(=I must be) in the things(=house) of my Father?”

50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.

51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and he was being subjected(=obedient) to them. And his mother was keeping all the sayings(=things) in her heart.

52 And Jesus was advancing(=growing) in [the] wisdom and stature, and (in) favor with God and men.
