(=alt.word)  ·  (added word)  ·  [omit]

Since many have undertaken to draw up a narrative about the matters having accomplished in(=among) us,

just as the ones having been eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning have delivered to us,

it seemed good to me also, having followed(=investigated) accurately all things from the first, to write you in order, most excellent Theophilus,

so that you might(=may) know the certainty of (the) things about(=of) which you have been taught.

In the days of Herod king of Judea, there was a certain priest, Zachariah by name, of (the) division of Abijah. And wife to him(=his wife) (was) of the daughters of Aaron and her name (was) Elizabeth.

And they were both righteous before [the] God, walking(=living) in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless(=blamelessly).

And there was not a child to them, because [the] Elizabeth was barren and both were [having] advanced in their days(=years).

Now it happened (for) him to serve as priest in the order of his division before [the] God.

According to the custom of priestly office, he received by lot to burn incense, having gone into the temple of the Lord.

And all the multitude of the people was praying outside (at) the hour of incense.

And an angel of (the) Lord appeared to him, standing(# perfect as present) from(=at) (the) right of the alter of incense.

And Zechariah, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

And the angel said (to) him, “Fear not, Zechariah, for your supplication was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John.”

“And there will be joy and gladness to you, and many will rejoice over(=at) his birth.”

“For he will be great in the sight of (the) Lord, and he might(=shall) never drink wine or strong drink. And he will be filled (with the) Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.”

“And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to (the) Lord their God.”

“And he will go before him in (the) spirit and power of Elijah, to turn (the) hearts of fathers to children and the disobedient in(=to) (the) wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people having been prepared for (the) Lord.”

And Zachariah said (to) the angel, “By what shall I know this? for I am old and my wife having been(=is) advanced in her days(=years).”

And having answered, the angel said (to) him, “I am Gabriel, the one standing(# perfect as present) before [the] God. I was sent to speak to you and to tell you these good things.”

“And behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until (the) day that these things happen, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”

And the people were waiting for [the] Zachariah. And they wondered in him to delay(=when he delayed) in the temple.

And having gone out, he was not [being] able to speak to them. And they knew that he has [had] seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them, and he was remaining dumb.

And it happened when his days of service were fulfilled(=completed). And he went to his house.

And after these days Elizabeth his wife conceived and was hiding herself five months, saying,

[that] Thus (the) Lord has done to me in (the) days that he looked upon (me), to take away my shame among men.”

And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from [the] God to a city of Galilee to(=of) which (the) name (was) Nazareth,

to a virgin having been engaged to a man to(=of) which (the) name (was) Joseph, of (the) house of David, and the name of the virgin (was) Mary.

And having gone in, he said (to) her, “Greetings, [having been] favored one, the Lord (is) with you.”

And she was greatly troubled at the saying, and was considering what sort of greeting this might be(#optative).

And the angel said (to) her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with [the] God,”

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and will bear a son. And you will call his name Jesus.”

“This will be great and will be called (the) Son of (the) Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.”

“And he will reign over the house of Jacob unto the ages(=forever), and of his kingdom will be no end.”

And Mary said (to) the angel, “How will this be, since I do not know man?”

And having answered, the angel said (to) her, “(The) Holy Spirit will come upon you, and (the) power of (the) Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the holy one being born will be called (the) Son of God.”

“And behold, your relative Elizabeth, she also has conceived a son in her old age. And this is sixth month with her being called barren.”

“For every saying(=thing)1 will not be impossible with God.”

And Mary said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord. May it be(# aorist optative) to me according your saying.” And the angel went away from her.

And having arisen in those days, Mary went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judea.

And she went into the house of Zachariah and greeted [the] Elizabeth.

And it happened, when [the] Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, (that) the baby leaped in her womb, and [the] Elizabeth was filled of(=with) (the) Holy Spirit.

And she exclaimed with a loud cry and said, “Having been blessed(=Blessed) (are) you in(=among) women. And having been blessed(=Blessed) (is) the fruit of your womb.”

“And how (graceful is) this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me!”

“For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped in gladness.”

“And blessed (is) the one having believed that there will(=would) be a fulfillment (of) the things having been spoken to her from (the) Lord.”

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,”

“and my spirit has rejoiced in [the] God my Savior,”

“for he has regarded [upon] the humble state of his handmaid; for behold, from [the] now (on), all [the] generations will call me blessed,”

“for the Mighty (One) has done great things for me, and holy (is) his name,”

“and his mercy (is) into generation and generation to the ones fearing him.”

“He has done mighty deed in(=with) his arm; he has scattered the proud (in the) imagination(# dative of respect) of their heart.”

“He has pulled down rulers from thrones and has exulted the humble;”

“he has filled the hungering ones of(=with) good things, and he has sent ones being wealthy(=the rich) away empty.”

“He has helped his servant Israel to remember(=in remembrance of his) mercy,”

“as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed(=descendants) unto the age(=for ever)

And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.

And the time (for) her to bear was fulfilled to [the] Elizabeth, and she bore a son.

And the neighbors and her relatives heard that (the) Lord magnified his mercy with(=for) her, and they were rejoicing with her.

And it happened, in(=on) the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him Zachariah by(=after) his father’s name.

And having answered, his mother said, “No, but he shall be called John.”

And they said (to) her, “[that] There is none from(=among) your relatives who is called (by) this name.”

and they were making signs to his father, how he would have(# optative) him be called.

And having asked a writing tablet, he wrote, saying, “John is his name,” and they all marvelled.

And his mouth was opened instantly and his tongue (was loosed), and he was speaking, blessing [the] God.

And fear came upon all the ones living around them, and all these sayings(=things)2 were being talked through [in] all the hill country of Judea.

And all the ones having heard (them) laid (them) in(=to) their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” For (the) hand of the Lord was with him.

And Zachariah his father was filled (with the) Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

“Blessed (be the) Lord [the] God of Israel, because he has visited and has done redemption for his people.”

“and he has raised up a horn of salvation (for) us in (the) house of David his servant,”

“as he spoke through(=by) (the) mouth of his holy prophets from (the) age(=of old)

(that was) salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all the ones hating us,”

“to do mercy with(=to) our fathers and to remember his holy covenant,”

(the) oath which he swore to Abraham our father, to give us,”

“having been delivered from (the) hand of enemies, to serve him fearlessly”

“in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.”

“And you also, child, will be called a prophet of (the) Most High, for you will go before (the) Lord to prepare his ways,”

[the] to give a knowledge of salvation to his people in(=through) forgiveness of their sins,”

“because of bowels of mercy(=the tender mercy) of our God, by which the rising sun will visit us from (the) height(=heaven),”

“to appear the ones sitting in darkness and shadow of death, to guide our feet into a(=the) way of peace.”

And the child was growing and becoming strong (in) spirit, and he was in the wildernesses until the days of his appearing publicly to [the] Israel.
