1 And having gone again into Capernaum after (some) days, it was heard that he is at home.
2 And many were gathered so as to have room no longer(=so that there was no longer room), not even the (spaces) at the door. And he was speaking the word to them.
3 And they(=some) come(# historical present tense), bringing to him a paralytic being carried by four men.
4 And not being able to bring (to) him because of the crowd, they unroofed(=removed) the roof where he was. And having dug out, they lower(# historical present tense) the bed where(=on which) the paralytic was lying.
5 And [the] Jesus, having seen their faith, says(# historical present tense) (to) the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”
6 And some of the scribes were sitting(# periphrastic imperfect) there, and questioning in their hearts,
7 “Why does this (man) speak thus? He is blaspheming. Who is able to forgive sins but one, the God?”
8 And [the] Jesus, immediately having known (in) his spirit that they question thus in themselves, says(# historical present tense) (to) them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?”
9 “Which is easier, to say (to) the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Arise, and take your bed and walk’?”
10 “but that you may know(# perfect subjunctive with present meaning) that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on the earth.” He says(# historical present tense) (to) the paralytic,
11 “I say (to) you, ‘Arise, take your bed and go to your house.’”
12 And he was risen(=stood up). And immediately having taken the(=his) bed, he went out before (them) all, so as all to be astonished and to glorify(=so that they all were astonished and glorified) [the] God, saying, [that] “We never saw thus(=anything like this)!”
13 And he went out again beside the sea. And all the crowd were coming to him. And he was teaching them.
14 And passing by, he saw Levi the (son) of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. And he says(# historical present tense) (to) him, “Follow me.” And having risen, he followed him.
15 And it happened, him to recline at table(=as he sat at table) in his house, [and] (that) many tax collectors and sinners were reclining at table(=were sitting together) (with) Jesus and his disciples. For there were many, and they were following Jesus.
16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, having seen that he is eating(# historical present tense) with sinners and tax-collectors, were saying (to) his disciples, “Why does he eat(# historical present tense) with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 And having heard, [the] Jesus says(# historical present tense) (to) them, “[that] The ones being strong(=well) have no need of a physician, but the ones having(=being) sick. I came not to call the righteous but sinners.”
18 And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting(# periphrastic imperfect). And they come and say(# historical present tense) (to) him, “For what(=Why) do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but disciples to you(=your disciples) do not fast?”
19 And [the] Jesus said (to) them, “[not, # expecting ‘No’] Are the sons(=guests) of the bridechamber able to fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as time(=As long as)1 they have the bridegroom with them, they are not able to fast.”
20 “But days will come, when the bridegroom might(=will) be taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.”
21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the fullness(=patch) pulls away from it, the new (from) the old, and a worse tear is made.”
22 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the wineskins, and the wine is lost and the (so are) the wineskins. But (one puts) new wine into new wineskins.”
23 And it happened, him to pass(=as he went) through the grainfields on the Sabbaths, [and] (that) his disciples began to make a way, plucking the heads of grain.
24 And the Pharisees were saying (to) him, “Look, why do they do (on) the Sabbaths what is not lawful?”
25 And he says(# historical present tense) (to) them, “Have you never read what David did when he and the ones with him had need (of food) and was(=were) hungry?”
26 “How he entered into the house of God in (the days) of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful to eat, except (for) the priests, and also gave (it) to the ones being with him?”
27 And he was saying (to) them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not [the] man for the Sabbath.”
28 “Therefore the Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath.”
