1 At that time Herod the tetrarch(=governor of a fourth part of a territory) heard the report of Jesus

2 And he said (to) his boys(=attendants), “This is John the Baptist. He has been risen from the dead, and therefore the mighty works are at work in him.”

3 For [the] Herod, having arrested [the] John, bound and put (him) in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

4 For [the] John said (to) him,“ It is not lawful (for) you to have her.”

5 And wishing to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they had(=regarded) him as a prophet.

6 And having been Herod’s birthday(=when Herod birthday came)1, the daughter of Herodias danced in the middle and pleased Herod.

7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

8 And having been prompted by her mother, she says, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

9 Having been sorry(=Although he was sorry), because of oaths and the ones reclining at the table with(=dining with) him, the king ordered (it) to be given.

10 And having sent, he had John beheaded in the prison.

11 And his head was brought on a platter and was given to the girl. And she brought (it) to her mother.

12 And having approached(=come), his disciples took the dead body and buried him. And having come, they reported to Jesus.

13 And having heard, [the] Jesus withdrew from there in a boat to a desert place privately. And having heard, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

14 And having come out, he saw a great crowd, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

15 And evening’s having come(=when it was evening)2, the disciples came to him, saying, “This is the(=a) desert place, and the hour has been already past. Send the crowds away, so that they, having gone into the villages, might buy foods for themselves.”

16 But [the] Jesus said (to) them, “They do not need to go away. You, give them (something) to eat.”

17 And they say to him, “We do not have (anything) here except five loaves of bread and two fish[es].”

18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.”

19 And having ordered the crowds to recline(=sit down) on the grass, having taken the five loaves of bread and the two fish[es], having looked up to [the] heaven, he blessed. And having broken, he gave the loaves to the disciples. And the disciples (gave them) to the crowds.

20 And all ate and were satisfied. And they took twelve baskets full of the fragments [the] being left over.

21 And the eating(#present participle as imperfect) ones were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22 And immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and [to] go before him to the other side, while he might dismiss the crowds.

23 And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into(=on) the mountain privately to pray. And evening’s having come(=when it was evening)3, he was alone there.

24 And the boat was already many stadia4 away from the land, being tossed by the waves, for the wind was against (it).

25 And (in the) fourth watch5 of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea.

26 And the disciples, having seen him walking on the sea, were terrified, saying, [that] “It is a ghost,” and they cried out in fear.

27 And immediately [the] Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart, I am. Do not be afraid.”

28 And having answered to him, [the] Peter said, “Lord, if you are(=it is you), command me to come (to) you on the water[s]

29 And he said, “Come.” And having gone down from the boat, Peter walked on the water[s], and came to [the] Jesus.

30 And seeing the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me.”

31 And immediately [the] Jesus, having reached out the(=his) hand, and caught him, and says (to) him,“You of little faith, Why did you doubt?”

32 And their having gotten(=when they got)6 into the boat, the wind ceased

33 And the ones in the boat worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

34 And having crossed over, they came to the land to(=of) Gennesaret.

35 And having recognized him, the men of that place sent (word) into that all neighbourhood, And they brought to him all the ones having illness.

36 And they begged him that they might only touch the edge of his garment. And as many as touched (it) were made well.
