(=alt.word) · (added word) · [omit]
Pursue [the] love, and desire the spiritual things(=gifts), and especially that you may prophesy.
For the one speaking (in) a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands, but he speaks mysteries (in) spirit.
And the one prophesying speaks edification and encouragement and consolation to men.
The one speaking (in) a tongue edifies himself, but the one prophesying edifies (the) church.
And I want you all to speak in tongues, but especially that you may prophesy. And the one prophesying (is) greater than the one speaking (in) tongues, unless he (may) interprets, that the church might(=may) receive edification.
And now, brothers, if I [might] come (to) you speaking (in) tongues, what will I benefit you unless I [might] speak to you either in revelation or in knowledge or in prophesy or (in) teaching?
Even the lifeless things, giving sound, whether flute or harp, unless they [might] give distinction (in) the tones, how will it be known the thing being piped or the thing being harped?
For if a trumpet [might] gives uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle?
So unless you also [might] give a clear word with the tongue, how will it be known the things be said? For you will be speaking into (the) air.
If it could happen(=Undoubtedly)1, there are so many kinds of sounds in (the) world, and none (is) without meaning.
Therefore if I [may] do not know the power of the sound(=the meaning of the language), I will be a foreigner to the speaking one, and the one speaking (will be) a foreigner in(=to) me.
So you also(=So it is with you). Since you are zealots(=eager) of(=for) spiritual things(=gifts), seek(=try) so that you may excel(=to excel) for the edification of the church.
Therefore, let the one speaking (in) a tongue pray so that he may interpret.
For if I [may] pray (in) a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
What is it then? I will pray (with) the spirit, and I will pray (with) the understanding also. I will sing (with) the spirit, and I will sing (with) the understanding also.
Otherwise, if you [may] bless in(=with the) spirit, how will the one occupying the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
I give thanks to [the] God, (that) I speak (in) tongues more (than) all of you.
But in (the) church I would rather [to] speak five words (with) my understanding, in order that I might(=may) instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Brothers, do not be children (in) the thinking; however, (in) the evil(=in regard to evil)2 be infants, but (in) the(=your) thinkings(=thinking) be mature.
In the law it has been written, [that] “In(=With) ones of other tongues and in(=with) (the) lips of others(=foreigners) I will speak to this people, and even then they will not listen (to) me,” says (the) Lord.
Therefore the tongues are for a sign not to the believing ones but to the unbelievers, and the prophecy (is) not to the unbelievers but to the believing ones.
Therefore if the whole church [may] come together and all [may] speak (in) tongues, and (the) unlearned or unbelievers [might] come, will they not say that you are mad?
And if all [may] prophesy, and an unbeliever or an unlearned one [might] comes, he is convicted by all, he is judged by all,
the secrets of his heart become(=are) disclosed, and so, falling on (his) face, he will worship [the] God, declaring “[that the] God is really among you!”
What is it then, brothers? Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
If any one speaks (in) a tongue, (let there be) [by] two or (at) most three, and (each) in turn, and let one interpret.
And if there [may] is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to [the] God.
And let two or three prophets speak, and let the others discern.
And if (something) [might] is revealed to another sitting (nearby), let the first keep silent.
For you all are able to prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
And (the) spirits of prophets is(=are) subject to prophets.
For [the] God is not (a God) of disorder but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
let the women in the churches keep silent. For it is not permitted to them(=they are not allowed) to speak, but let them be subject, as the law says.
But if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home. For it is a shameful (for) a woman to speak in church.
Or did the word of God come [out] from you? Or did it come down (to) you only?
If anyone think (himself) to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge the things which I write (to) you are (the) commandment of (the) Lord.
But if anyone ignores (this), let him be ignorant.
So, my brothers, desire [the] to prophesy, and do not forbid [the] to speak in tongues.
And let all things be done decently and according to(=in) order.
