1 “Men, brothers and fathers, hear now my defense to you.”
2 And having heard that he was speaking to them in the Hebrew language, they became more quite[ness]. And he says,
3 “I am a Jewish men, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, and having been brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel having been educated according to (the) strictness of the Law of our fathers, being zealous of(=for) God as you all are today,”
4 “who(=I) persecuted this Way to (their) death, binding and delivering to prisons both men and women.”
5 “As the high priest and all the elder witness to me, from whom also having received letters, I was going to the brothers in Damascus, bringing(=to bring) the ones also having been bound there to Jerusalem so that they might be punished.”
6 “And it happened to me going and coming near to Damascus about noon, suddenly a bright light from [the] heaven to flash(=shone) around me.”
7 “And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’”
8 “And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said (to) me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you persecute.’”
9 “And the ones being with me indeed saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of the One speaking to me.”
10 “And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said (to) me, ‘Having risen, go into Damascus, and there it will be told you about all things which has(=have) been appointed for you to do.’”
11 “And as I was not seeing for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of the ones being with me, I went into Damascus.”
12 “And a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, being respected by all Jews living in (there)”
13 “Having come to me and having stood by, he said (to) me, ‘Brother Saul, look up.’ And I looked at him in that hour.”
14 “And he said, ‘[The] God of our fathers appointed you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth.’”
15 “For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.”
16 “And now why do you wait? Having risen, be baptized and wash away your sins, having called on his name.”
17 “And it happened to me, having returned(=when I had returned) to Jerusalem and my praying(=when I was praying)1 in the temple, to become me in an ecstasy.”
18 “And to see(=I saw) him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get quickly out of Jerusalem, because they will not accept your witness about me.’”
19 “And I said, ‘Lord, they know that I was imprisoning and beating throughout(=in every)2 the synagogues the ones believing on you.’”
20 “And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed, I also was standing and approving and keeping the clothes of the ones killing him.”
21 “And he said (to) me, ‘Go, [because] I will send forth you far away to Gentiles.’”
22 And they were listening (to) him up to this word, and lifted up their voice, saying, “Take away such a man from the earth, for it is not proper (for) him to live.”
23 And their yelling and throwing the(=their) cloths and hurling dust in the air,(=as they were yelling and throwing their clothes and hurling dust into the air)3
24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the camp, having directed him to be examined with whip(=by scourging), so that he might know for what reason [thus] they were shouting against him.
25 But as they stretched out him with the thongs, [the] Paul said (to) the centurion standing by, “[If(#introducing a direct question)] Is it lawful (for) you to flog a Roman [man], and uncondemned?”
26 And having heard, having gone to the commander, the centurion reported, saying, “What are you going to do? For this man is a Roman.”
27 And having come to (him), the commander said (to) him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” And he said, “Yes.”
28 And the commander answered, “I acquired this citizenship of(=with) large sum of (money).” And [the] Paul said, “But I was born (a citizen).”
29 Therefore, the ones being about to examine him immediately stood away from him. And the commander was afraid, having realized that he is(=was) a Roman and that he had bound him.
30 The next day, wishing to know a certain thing(=real reason) why he is(=was) accused by the Jews, he released him, and ordered to come together the high priests and all the council. And having brought down [the] Paul, he made (him) stand before them.
