1 In (the) beginning was the Word, and the Word was with [the] God, and the Word was God.
2 This one was in (the) beginning with [the] God.
3 All things were made through him, and without him was made not one thing(=nothing) that has been made.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man, having been sent from God; the name, John, (was given) to him.
7 This (man) came for a witness, that he might witness(=to testify) about(=to) the light, so that all might believe through him.
8 He was not that light, but (he came) so that he might testify about(=to) the light.
9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming(# periphrastic imperfect) into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and(=but) the world did not know him.
11 He came to his own things, and(=but) his own (people) did not receive him.
12 But as many as received him, he gave (the) right to become children of God to those believing in his name,
13 who were born, not of blood nor of (the) will of (the) flesh nor of (the) will of man, but of God,
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt [in a tent] among us. And we have seen his glory, glory as of the only begotten (Son) from (the) Father, full of grace and [of] truth.
15 John testifies about him and [has] cried out, saying, “This was he whom I said, ‘The one coming after me has become before(=surpassed) me, because he was my first(=before me).”
16 [that] From his fullness have we all received, and grace upon grace.
17 For the law was given through Moses, and the grace and the truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God. (The) only begotten God(=Son) being in the bosom of the Father, that one has made (him) known.
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem that they might ask(=to ask) him, “Who are you?”
20 And he confessed and did not deny, but he confessed “[that] I am not the Christ.”
21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 Then they said (to) him,“Who are you?” (In order) that we might give(=Let us give) an answer to the ones having sent us. “What do you say about yourself?”
23 He was saying, “I (am) a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of (the) Lord,’” as the prophet Isaiah said.
24 And they were having been sent(=had been sent)1 from the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him and said (to) him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26 (The) John answered them, saying, “I baptize in(=with) water. Among you stands(# perfect as present) (one) whom you do not know(# perfect as present).”
27 “(He is) the one coming after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy that I might untie(=to untie).”
28 These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where [the] John was baptizing(# periphrastic imperfect).
29 The next day he sees [the] Jesus coming toward him. and he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, taking away the sin of the world!”
30 This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who has become before(=surpassed) me, because he was my first(=before me).”
31 “And I did not know(# pluperfect) him, but so that he might be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing in(=with) water.”
32 And John testified, saying, “[that] I have seen the Spirit coming down as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.”
33 “And I did not know(# pluperfect) him, but the One having sent me to baptize in(=with) water, that One said (to) me, ‘This (man) on whom you [might] see the Spirit coming down and remaining [on him] is the one baptizing in(=with) (the) Holy Spirit.’”
34 “And I have seen and [have] testified that this is the Son of God.”
35 The next day again [the] John was standing(# pluperfect for imperfect), and two of(# partitive genitive) his disciples.
36 And having looked at [the] Jesus’ walking, he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
37 And the two disciples heard his speaking, and they followed [the] Jesus.
38 And having turned, and having seen them following, [the] Jesus says (to) them, “What are you looking for?” And they said (to) him, “Rabbi {which is called, being translated(=when it is translated), Teacher}, where are you staying?”
39 He says (to) them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he is(=was) staying, and stayed with him that day. It was about (the) tenth hour.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two having heard from John(=John speak) and having followed him.
41 This one first finds the(=his) own brother Simon, and says (to) him, “We have found the Messiah” {which is [being] translated Christ}.
42 He brought him to [the] Jesus. Having looked at him, [the] Jesus said, “You are Simon the son of John. You will be called Cephas” {which is interpreted Peter}.
43 The next day he wanted to go to [the] Galilee, and he finds(=found) Philip. And [the] Jesus says(=said) to him, “Follow me.”
44 And [the] Philip was from Bethsaida, [from] the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip finds [the] Nathanael and says (to) him, “We have found (him, of) whom Moses wrote in the law and the prophets (also wrote), Jesus from(=of) Nazareth, (the) son of Joseph.”
46 And Nathanael said (to) him, “Can anything good [to] be(=come) out of Nazareth?” [The] Philip says (to) him,“Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw [the] Nathanael coming toward him, and he says of him, “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”
48 Nathanael says (to) him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said (to) him, “Before the Philip to call(=Before Philip called) you, being(=while you were) under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus answered and said (to) him, “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things (than) these.”
51 And he says (to) him, “Truly truly I say (to) you, you will see [the] heaven having opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
