1 And he went out from there, and he comes into his hometown. And his disciples follow him.
2 And Sabbath’s having become(=when the Sabbath came)1, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many, hearing (him), were being astounded, saying, “From where (are) these things (given to) this one? And what (is) the wisdom having been given to this one? And (what are) such mighty works being done through his hands?”
3 “Isn’t this one the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James and Joses(=Joseph) and Judas and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they were being offended at him.
4 And [the] Jesus was saying (to) them, “[that] A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, and in(=among) his relatives, and in his house.”
5 And he was [not, # double negative] being able to do there no mighty work, except (that) having laid the(=his) hands on a few sick ones, he healed (them).
6 And he were marvelling because of their unbelief. And he was going around about the villages, teaching.
7 And he calls to (him) the twelve, and began to send them out two (by) two, and was giving them authority (over) the unclean spirits.
8 And he commanded them that they may take nothing for (their) journey except a staff only; no bread, no bag, no copper(=money) in the(=their) belt.
9 But having had worn(=wearing)2 sandals, and you might not put on(=do not put on)3 two tunics.
10 And he was saying (to) them, “Wherever you [might] enter into a house, stay there until you [might] leave there.”
11 “And whatever place might(=will) not receive you nor might(=will) they listen (to) you, going out from there, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony (against) them.”
12 And having gone out, they proclaimed that they may(=should) repent.
13 And they were casting out many demons and were anointing (with) oil many sick ones and were healing (them).
14 And [the] King Herod heard (of him), for his name had become(# aorist) well known. And some were saying, “[that] John the Baptist has been risen from (the) dead, and therefore the mighty works are at work in him.”
15 But others were saying, “[that] He is Elias.” And others were saying, “[that] (He is) a prophet, like one of the prophets.”
16 But having heard, [the] Herod was saying, “John, whom I beheaded, [this] has been raised.”
17 For [the] Herod himself, having sent, arrested [the] John, and bound him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married(# aorist) her.
18 For [the] John was saying (to) Herod, “[that] It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
19 But Herodias were having a grudge (against) him, and wanted to kill him. But she was not [being] able to(=could not),
20 for [the] Herod were fearing [the] John, knowing(# perfect as present) him (to be) a righteous and holy man, (and) he was protecting him. And having heard him, he was being much perplexed. And he was hearing him gladly.
21 And an opportune day’s having become(=an opportune day came)4 when Herod (on) his birthday(# dative of time) made a supper for his nobles, and the military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.
22 And Herodias’ daughter’s having come and having danced(=when the daughter of Herodias came and danced)5, she pleased [the] Herod and the ones reclining with(=those who sat with him). And the king said (to) the girl, “Ask me whatever you [may] want, and I will give you.”
23 And he swore (to) her, “Whatever you [might] ask, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”
24 And having gone out, she said (to) her mother, “What might(=shall) I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.”
25 And having entered immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying, “I want that at once you might give me(=you to give me at once) on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
26 And having been deeply distressed, the king, because of the oaths and the ones reclining(=those who sat with him), did not want to refuse her.
27 And immediately having sent an executioner, the king commanded to bring his head. And having gone out, he beheaded him in the prison.
28 And he brought his head on a platter, and gave it (to) the girl. And the girl gave it (to) her mother.
29 And having heard, his disciples came and took his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
30 And the apostles gather(# passive) to [the] Jesus, and reported to him all that they did and what they taught.
31 And he says (to) them, “Come away by yourselves privately to a desert place, and rest a while.” For the ones coming and the ones going were many, and they were having no time to eat.
32 And they went away in the boat to a desert place privately.
33 And many saw them going, and knew. They ran together there on foot from all the cities and went ahead of them.
34 And having come out, he saw a large crowd, and had compassion upon them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.
35 And already much hour’s coming(=when it was already late)6, having come to him, his disciple were saying, “The place is desert and already hour (is) much(=very) (late).”
36 “Send them away, that having gone away into the surrounding country and villages they might buy themselves that they might eat(=something to eat).”
37 But having answered, he said (to) them, “You give them (something) to eat.” And they say (to) him, “Having gone away, might(=shall) we buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and shall we give them to eat?”
38 And he says (to) them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And having known(=found), they say, “Five, and two fish.”
39 And he commanded them all to recline(=to have all sit down) companies (by) companies(=in groups) on the green grass.
40 And they reclined(=sat down) flower bed (by) flower bed(=in groups), by hundreds and by fifties.
41 And having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to [the] heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves. And he was giving (them) (to) his disciples that they may set before(=to set before) them. And he divided the two fish (among them) all.
42 And they all ate and were satisfied.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.
44 And the ones having eaten the loaves were five thousand men.
45 And immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and to go before (him) to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismisses the crowd.
46 And having said farewell (to) them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
47 And evening’s having become(=when evening came)7, the boat was in (the) middle of the sea, and he (was) alone on the land.
48 And having seen them straining in the to row(=at rowing)8, for the wind was against them, about fourth watch(=3:00-6:00 a.m.) of the night he comes to them, walking on the sea. And he intented to pass them by.
49 But the ones having seen him walking on the sea thought that he is a ghost, and cried out,
50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he talked with them, and says (to) them, “Take heart. It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
51 And he went up to them into the boat. And the wind ceased. And they were being very exceedingly astonished in themselves,
52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their heart was having been hardened(=was hardened)9.
53 And having crossed over, they came on the land(=landed) into Gennesaret and anchored (there).
54 And their having come out(=when they came out)10 of the ship, immediately having known him,
55 they ran through that whole region, and began to carry about on [the] beds the ones having(=being) sick (to) wherever they were hearing that he is.
56 And wherever he was entering into villages or into cities or into country, they laid the ones ailing in the marketplaces, and were begging him that they might touch even the edge of his garment. And as many as touched him were being made well.
