1 And in those days John the Baptist comes(=came), proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea,
2 saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heavens has come near.”
3 For this is the one [having been] spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, “A voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of (the) Lord, Make his paths straight.’”
4 And John himself was having his clothing from(=of) hairs of camel and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then Jerusalem and all [the] Judea and all the neighborhood of the Jordan went out to him.
6 And they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
7 And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for [the] baptism, he said (to) them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath being about to(=to come)?”
8 “Therefore, bear fruit worthy of repentance.”
9 “And do not think to say in yourselves, ‘We have [the] Abraham (as our) father.’ For I tell you that [the] God is able from these stones to raise up children (for) [the] Abraham.”
10 “And the ax is already laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree not bearing good fruit is cut down and [is] thrown into (the) fire.”
11 “I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but the One coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in(=with) (the) Holy Spirit and fire,”
12 “whose winnowing fork (is) in his hand, and he will thoroughly clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the barn, and will burn up the chaff (with) unquenchable fire.”
13 Then [the] Jesus comes from [the] Galilee to [the] John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
14 And [the] John was preventing him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 And having answered, [the] Jesus said (to) him, “Allow now, for thus it is proper for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allows him.
16 And having been baptized, [the] Jesus immediately went up from the water. And, behold, the heavens were opened to him1. And he saw (the) Spirit of God descending as a dove and coming upon him.
17 And behold, a voice from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved son, in(=with) whom I was well pleased.”
