Now faith is substance of (the things) being hoped, evidence of matters not being seen.

For in(=by) this the elders(=ancestors) were testified(=received approval).

(By) faith we understand the ages to be formed(=that the worlds were formed) (by the) word of God, to the thing being seen not to have become(=so that the thing being seen was not made) out of showing things(=what are visible).

(By) faith Abel offered to [the] God a greater sacrifice than Cain, through which he was testified to be righteous; [the] God’s testifying(=God gave approval)1 over(=to) his gifts, and through it, having died, he still speaks.

(By) faith Enoch was taken away the not to see death(=so that he did not see death)2, and was not being found because [the] God took him away. For before the translation(=he was taken) he had been testified to have pleased [the] God.

But without faith it is impossible to please (God), for it necessary for the one coming to God to believe that He is and He becomes a rewarder(=He rewards) to the ones seeking Him.

(By) faith Noah, having been warned (by God) about the things not being seen yet, having moved with godly fear, built an ark for (the) salvation of his house, through which(=faith) he was condemning the world and became an heir of the righteousness according to faith.

(By) faith Abraham obeyed, being called to go out to a place which he was about to(=would) receive for an inheritance, and went out, not knowing where he goes(=was going).

(By) faith he stayed in (the) land of promise as (in) other land, having dwelled(# same tense with main verb) in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the co-heirs of the same promise.

For he was looking forward to the city having the foundations, whose builder and maker (is) [the] God.

(By) faith Sarah herself also received power for conception of seed even beyond time of age, because she considered (Him) faithful, the One having promised.

Therefore, from one (man), and (him) moreover having been died(=as good as dead), were born (descendants) as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable sand by the lip of the sea(=seashore).

According to faith these all died, not having received the promises, but having seen them from afar and having welcomed, and having confessed that they are(=were) strangers and foreigners on the earth.

For the ones saying such things show that they seek a homeland.

And on one hand if they had been thinking of that (land) from which they came out(# unfulfilled condition), they would have had time(=opportunity) to return,

now, on the other hand, they desire a better (country), that is, a heavenly one. Therefore [the] God is not ashamed [them] to be called their God, for He prepared a city (for) them.

(By) faith Abraham has offered [the] Isaac, being tested. And the one having received the promises was ready to offer up the(=his) only begotten (son),

of whom it was said, “[that] In Isaac (your) seed shall be named (for) you.”

having considered that [the] God (was) able to raise (man) even from (the) dead; hence, in a parable(=figuratively speaking), he received him back.

(By) faith Isaac blessed [the] Jacob and [the] Esau concerning things to come.

(By) faith Jacob, dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshipped, (leaning) on the top of his staff.

(By) faith Joseph, coming to the end (of his life), made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave instructions about his bones.

(By) faith Moses, having been born, was hidden (for) three months by his parents, because they saw the child (was) beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.

(By) faith Moses, having become great(=when he grew up), refused to be said(=called) (the) son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

rather having chosen to be mistreated with the people of God, than to have fleeting pleasure of sin,

having considered the insult (for the sake) of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to the(=his) reward.

(By) faith he left Egypt, not having feared the King’s anger, for he endured as seeing the One (who is) invisible.

(By) faith he [has] kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the one destroying the firstborns might(=would) not touch their (firstborns).

(By) faith they passed through the Red Sea as through(=on) dry land, (by) which the Egyptians, having taken experiment(=tried to do so), were swallowed up.

(By) faith the walls of Jericho fell, having been encircled(=after they had been encircled) for seven days.

(By) faith the prostitute Rahab did not perished with the ones having disobeyed, having received the spies with(=in) peace.

And what more may(=shall) I say? For the time will leave behind(=fail) me telling(=to tell) about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, both Samuel and the prophets,

who through faith conquered kingdoms, worked righteousness, attained promises, stopped (the) mouths of lions,

quenched power(=the violence) of fire, escaped mouth(=the edge) of (the) sword, were empowered from weakness, became mighty in war, (and) broke foreign armies.

Women received their dead from(=by) resurrection, but others were tortured, not having accepted(=not willing to accept) the release, so that they might attain a better resurrection,

and others received trial of mockings and floggings, and even of chains and imprisonment.

They were stoned, they were sawn, (were tempted), (and) they died in(=by) murder of sword. They went about in sheepskins (and) in goatskins, being in want, being oppressed, being tormented,

of whom the world was not worthy, wandering over deserts and mountains, and (in) caves and [the] holes of the earth.

And these all, having been testified through the(=their) faith, did not receive the promise,

[the] God’s having provided(=since God had provided)3 something better for us, so that without us they should not be made perfect.
