1 And having been saved then, we found out that the island is(=was) called Melita.
2 And the natives were showing not having experienced(=unusual) kindness to us, because they, having kindled a fire, welcomed us all because of the falling rain and because of the cold.
3 And Paul’s having gathered(=when Paul gathered)1 a quantity of sticks and having put(=put)2 (them) on the fire, a viper, having come out by the heat, fastened on his hand.
4 And when the natives saw the beast(=creature) hanging from his hand, they were saying to one another, “Definitely this man is a murder, whom, having been saved from the sea, justice did not allow to live.”
5 Therefore he, having shaken off the beast into the fire, suffered no harm.
6 And they were expecting him to be about to swell or to fall dawn dead suddenly. But their expecting(=while they expected)3 for a long time, and seeing(=when they saw)4 nothing unusual happening to him, having changed their mind, they were saying him to be a god.
7 And in the (places) about that place(=in the neighborhood of that place), were property (belonging) to the chief (man) of the island, Publius by name, who, having welcomed us, hospitably entertained us for three days.
8 And it happened the father of Publius to lay sick(=that the father of Publius lay sick), suffering (from) fever and dysentery, to whom Paul, having entered in and having prayed, having put his hands on him, healed him.
9 And this having happened(=when this happened)5, the rest also in the island having(=who had) diseases were coming to and were being healed.
10 They also honored us with many honors, and they put on (board) the things for the needs to (us) setting sail.
11 And after three months we set sail in a ship having passed the winter in the island, (a ship of) Alexandria, with the figurehead of Dioscuri
12 And having landed to(=at) Syracuse, we stayed (there) three days.
13 From there having made a circuit, we arrived at Rhegium. And after one day the south wind’s having come up(=when the south wind came up)6, on the second day we came to Puteoli,
14 where having found brothers, we were invited to stay with them seven days. And thus we went to [the] Rome.
15 From there the brothers, having heard the things about us, came to a meeting(=to meet) with us as far as Appii Forum and the Three Taverns, whom [the] Paul, having seen (and) having thanked God, took courage.
16 And when we went into Rome, it was permitted to Paul to stay by himself with the soldier guarding him.
17 And after three days it came to pass for him to call together the ones being leaders of the Jews. And their having come together(=when they came together)7, he was saying to them, “Men (and) brothers, I, having done(=although I have done) nothing against the people or the ancestral customs, was delivered (as) a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,”
18 “who, having examined me, were willing to release (me) because of no reason of death to be in me(=because there is no reason of death in me),”
19 “but the Jews’ speaking against(=when the Jews spoke against)8 (it), I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not as having(=even though I had not) anything to bring against my nation.”
20 “For this reason therefore I called you to see and speak, because for the sake of the hope of Israel I am bound (with) this chain.”
21 And they said (to) him. “We neither have received letters about you from [the] Judaea, nor anyone of brothers, having arrived, reported or spoken anything bad about you.”
22 “But we desire to hear from you what you think, because it, about this heresy, is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”
23 And having appointed a day (with) him, they, more than before, came to him into(=at) the(=his) lodging, to whom he was explaining, witnessing the kingdom of God, persuading them about Jesus from the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning until evening.
24 And some indeed were being persuaded by the things being said, but the others were disbelieving.
25 And being disagreeing with one another(=among themselves), they were leaving, [the] Paul’s having said(=after Paul said)9 one word, “The Holy Spirit spoke well through Isaiah the prophet (to) your fathers,”
26 “saying, ‘Go to this people and say, In hearing(#cognate dative for emphasis) you will hear and you never understand. Looking(#Hebraic idiomatic expression), you will look and you never see(=perceive).’”
27 “For the heart of this people was thickened, and they heard heavily(=hardly) with the ears, and they closed their eyes, lest they see (with) the eyes and hear (with) the ears and understand (with) the heart and turn, and I heal them.”
28 “Therefore, let it be known (to) you that this salvation of God was sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear.”
29 His saying these things(=when he said these words)10, the Jews went away, having much dispute among themselves.11
30 And he stayed a whole two years in (his) own rented house and was welcoming all the ones coming to him,
31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness without hindrance.
